How to Initiate a Congressional Inquiry: A Pilot’s Guide to Getting Your Voice Heard

When the FAA won’t respond, your AME is powerless, and your certification is stuck in limbo, it’s time to bring in your elected officials. A congressional inquiry can force accountability and clarity in ways no private channel can.

What is a Congressional Inquiry?

A congressional inquiry is a formal request from your U.S. Representative or Senator to a federal agency on behalf of a constituent. It can help when you face unreasonable delays, unanswered questions, or bureaucratic stonewalling—especially in FAA medical certification cases.

Steps to Take

  1. Find your Representative and Senators: Use congress.gov/members or house.gov.
  2. Gather your documentation: Include a 1-page summary, timeline, supporting evidence, and a clear ask.
  3. Download and complete their privacy release form: Most offices require this to act on your behalf.
  4. Call or email the office: Confirm they’ve received your materials and are opening the case.

What to Include

  • A respectful, clear explanation of your situation
  • Documentation of FAA delays, denials, or inconsistent action
  • Statements or findings from private doctors (if available)
  • Any history of unanswered communication from the FAA

Sample Request Language

“I am a constituent requesting assistance with the FAA regarding a delayed medical certification. Despite submitting all required documentation and evaluations, I have received no clear response. I’ve enclosed a signed privacy release and summary for your review.”

Why It Works

When a congressional office gets involved, the FAA is required to respond. In many cases, it leads to:

  • Faster responses from the FAA
  • Clarification of what’s holding up your case
  • Potential reevaluation of unfair decisions

This is your government. Use it. You served. You deserve clarity. And when the system won’t give it to you, your elected officials can help demand it.
