Program Accountability
HIMS must be accountable. We are demanding oversight of its providers, processes, and outcomes to protect all pilots — from those flagged for alcohol, drugs, or SSRIs to those targeted for therapy, trauma, or mere suspicion.
Shared Responsibility in the HIMS Program
The FAA, ALPA, and HIMS AMEs operate together in a system that harms pilots. This matrix illustrates how they jointly contribute to systemic abuse.
| Entity | Role in HIMS | Potential Liability | Legal / Policy Concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| FAA | Creates and enforces HIMS policy; issues Special Issuances and monitoring conditions. |
Overreach / denial of due process Delegation of authority without oversight Compelled religious elements |
Administrative law Constitutional law |
| ALPA | FAA-funded to manage HIMS operations; trains AMEs and company representatives. |
Conflict of interest (union vs. enforcer) Discriminatory gatekeeping Suppression of dissent |
Labor law Civil rights |
| HIMS AMEs | Evaluate pilots and report to FAA; often selected within closed networks. |
Biased reporting Coercive testing protocols Arbitrary medical judgments |
Medical ethics Professional liability |
These actors function in a closed system where transparency is minimal and pilot rights are often disregarded. This is not a neutral oversight program — it is institutionalized harm.
What We Are Pushing For
- Independent audits of HIMS providers and AMEs
- Penalties for unethical conduct by medical professionals
- Confidential abuse reporting channels
- Whistleblower protections for pilots and staff
Our Approach
We track real-world cases, identify patterns of harm, and push for structural reform with independent oversight mechanisms built into the system.
Raising Awareness & Exposing Abuses
We are shedding light on patterns of abuse within the FAA HIMS Program — affecting pilots across multiple categories. From misdiagnoses and forced treatment to retaliation and stigma for mental health or prescription use, systemic reform is overdue.
What We Are Exposing
- Referrals based solely on SSRI use or non-diagnostic flags
- Labeling pilots as substance dependent without clinical diagnosis
- Forced rehabilitation admissions with minimal evidence
- Employer-driven terminations using HIMS as leverage
- Mental health bias in federal medical language
- Retaliation against pilots who self-advocate
