Invited to Contribute — Then Shut Out of the September HIMS Seminar

Just a few weeks ago at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, Pilots for HIMS Reform met directly with FAA and ALPA HIMS leadership. In those conversations, Dr. Quay Snyder personally invited us to submit formal topic proposals for the upcoming September FAA/ALPA HIMS Seminar.

We took that invitation seriously. In good faith, our leadership team quickly prepared and submitted 11 detailed, solutions-focused session topics—each grounded in research, real-world data, and lived experience. These proposals covered:

  • Establishing evidence-based off-ramp standards for ending monitoring.
  • Addressing ethical concerns and power imbalances in the HIMS system.
  • Creating independent oversight to prevent conflicts of interest.
  • Introducing pilot-centered recovery alternatives beyond mandated AA/BOAF participation.
  • Documenting the psychological and financial impacts of prolonged monitoring.
  • Protecting whistleblowers, stopping employer interference, and ensuring data transparency.

We also submitted a formal request for P4HR to be recognized as a coalition—so our participation would not be seen as just a few individuals speaking out, but as the collective voice of the many pilots, air traffic controllers, HIMS-trained AMEs, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, legal experts, and other professionals who have been sidelined, silenced, or outright disregarded by the current system.

“We are unable to accommodate any of the proposed topics for this seminar.”

Our request for coalition recognition was also denied. By declining our topics and our representation, they have made it clear— the voices of those most directly impacted by the HIMS program will remain unheard at the September seminar. This includes the pilots, ATCs, medical professionals, and advocates who live with the program’s consequences every day.

P4HR exists to speak for those who have no voice. Their silence in response is, in itself, a statement—and we are listening. If we are not welcome on their stage, we will make sure our voices are heard in Washington, in the press, and across the aviation community.
