Coalition Calls for Removal of FAA Medical Official Over Misconduct
June 20, 2025 — Pilots for HIMS Reform has formally submitted a request to the FAA’s Aerospace Medical Certification Division for the immediate removal of Dr. Matthew Dumstorf from all roles involving medical oversight of airmen.
The letter, addressed to Dr. David O’Brien and copied to Federal Air Surgeon Dr. Susan Northrup, outlines a series of documented concerns including:
- A reversal by the NTSB in Donald Park v. FAA, where the Board found the FAA’s denial relied on medically unsupported logic authored by Dumstorf;
- A federal Petition for Writ of Mandamus that led to the pilot being granted an unrestricted first-class medical shortly after filing;
- Multiple anonymous pilot reports citing medical overreach, retaliation, and unjustified monitoring extensions.
The coalition asserts that Dumstorf’s ongoing presence poses a risk to professional fairness and public trust in the aeromedical system. The letter also calls for a full audit of related cases and the establishment of independent oversight mechanisms.
